In any natural or human-caused disaster, about 33 percent of those directly impacted by the event will suffer from Acute Stress Disorder. Half of these, if not receiving trauma-informed treatment within six to eight weeks, will develop PTSD. COVID-19 is exacerbating this problem due to the extent and duration of the pandemic. Already, significant increases in mental health issues from depression to suicidal ideation are occurring. It is necessary to take action now before the US faces another crisis that will last for many years to come.

This webinar will provide an overview of some of the steps that individuals, communities, employers and public health departments can take to lessen this problem, particularly in the most vulnerable populations.

Speakers:

Bob Schmidt is a licensed professional counselor who lives and practices in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. He received the American Counseling Association Samuel T. Gladding Unsung Hero Award for his work following the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.

Sharon L. Cohen is a communication and collaboration specialist with a background in the mental health field including involvement with the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.

The Paradise California Camp Fire: A Survivor Speaks (and Films) the Lessons

June 30th, 2021 at 11:00 am EST | REGISTER HERE!

Join us on June 30th to hear former FEMA Administrator Brock Long, and Christopher Allan Smith, an Emmy-Award Winning documentarian, who lived in Paradise, California with his family until the Camp Fire consumed his home in November 2018.

Since then, he has been conducting interviews and research into the history of the fire as well as the lessons taken by first responders, civilians, government officials, and private disaster planners, to produce film and writing projects based on those lessons. Smith also acted as a Field Producer for Ron Howard’s REBUILDING PARADISE as well as the writer/director of the PBS broadcast documentary A HIGH AND AWFUL PRICE: LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE CAMP FIRE.

In this webinar we will talk to Chris about his experience, the lessons he learned from the disaster, and his lessons learned for others that he is documenting in an exclusive column with Homeland Security Today.

We present this series to bring a voice to the victims of disaster and add some personal texture and experience to the impact of disasters, terrorism, and other tragic acts of violence.
